Kauffman Takes First Ever Speedway Sportsman Win; Rain Halts Remaining Activities At ODS …..

Jeff Kauffman from Purcellville Va. picked up his first ever feature win Saturday night at the Old Dominion Speedway in the Gaston Automotive Speedway Sportsman division. Kauffman led the first 13 of 25 circuits around the 3/8 mile oval before heavy rains pelted the speedway. After waiting several minutes and checking the weather report for the surrounding area, track promoter Dick Gore canceled the remaining laps, and the remaining NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge activities. “The weather report stated that there was rain all around us, and with the humidity as well, even if we would have gotten a window somehow, it would have taken a long time to dry the track,” Gore stated. Kauffman became the seventh different winner in the Speedway Sportsman division. Even as the crowd was exiting the speedway, a steady drizzle started once again. With the rains, it assured Mike Darne as the representative from ODS in the first tier of the Atlantic Seaboard Regional points chase that ends this weekend. Darne took over the point lead last week after a disastrous weekend for Mark McFarland.
Next Saturday night, the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge Late Model Stock Cars compete in a 200 lap feature. Only Mike Darne, Mark McFarland, and Mike Southard have a mathematical chance at the track title. The Redman Fleet Service Grand Stocks compete in a 50 lap feature, with only Chris Donnelly having an outside shot at the track title to overtake defending track champ Jimmy Hardin. The Mini Stocks will compete in a 30 lap feature. Defending track champ Sean Dawson, Mike Carte, Keith Machliet, and Vince Langan are the four drivers with a mathematical shot at the track title. The Gaston Automotive Speedway Sportsman will compete in a 25 lap feature, with that title up for grabs between Jeff Sisak, James Lucas,  Les Miranda, Jamie DeMattio, and Jeff Kauffman. Also on the schedule are 20 lap features for the Champ Karts and the Mini Cups. Racing action gets underway with qualifying at 5:15 PM, with racing action for the Champs and Mini Cups beginning at 6:30 PM. Stock Car racing action takes the green at 7:00 PM.
