Stan Owens Picks Up First Win In 2002
.
Stan Owens from Haymarket Va. picked up his
first win in 2002 Saturday night at the Old Dominion Speedway, taking home the checkers in
the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Presented by Dodge 75 lap feature for the Late Model Stock
Cars. Owens led flag to flag enroute to the win. Last weeks feature winner Brian
Jenkins led the 19 car field in qualifying, as he turned the quick lap around the 3/8 mile
oval in 15.744 seconds, a full tenth faster than Owens, who turned a lap of 15.845
seconds. Mike Darne was third quickest with a 15.862 lap, while Mark McFarland, the
current NASCAR Atlantic Seaboard Regional point leader (15.920) and 2 time feature winner
Mike Southard (15.986) rounded out the top 5. After the inversion, Owens found himself on
the front row, got the jump on the initial start, and led the charge into turn one. This
was a lead that he would never relinquish. Mike Southard, who had started on the front row
as well, closed the gap on several occasions throughout the 75 lap event, but was never
able to mount a serious challenge. We were so bad last week, with all the problems
we had. There were a lot of late nights and early mornings this week to get the car back
to where we needed to be. We changed everything on this car, and it paid off, said
an elated Owens in victory lane. The battle for the third spot between Case, Darne, and
McFarland was a good one, as the three veterans battled for most of the event. Case was
able to hold off Darne at the end, while McFarland faded by the 75 lap mark.
Other race winners included Jimmy Hardin from Pomfret, Md., who breezed to his 6th
feature win in the Redman Fleet Service 50 lap Grand Stock feature. The Mini Stock feature
was won by Vince Langan from Centreville, Va. The win was Langans 3rd win
in 2002. Ray Miller from Manassas, Va. picked up his 3rd win in 2002 in the
Gaston Automotive Speedway Sportsman 25 lap feature.
